European Golden Shoe Update: Cristiano Ronaldo Takes The Lead, Barcelona's Lionel Messi Following Closely

Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo is the new leader in the ESM Golden Shoe standings following his impressive performance at the weekend.

The Portugal international netted a brace against Valencia to help Los Blancos to a 2-0 win and has now netted 16 league goals.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo is closely followed by Argentina international Lionel Messi in the standings. The tricky attacker also scored twice on Saturday to help Barcelona to a comfortable 3-0 away win over Osasuna.

Spartak Moscow striker Welliton still sits third in the standings with 19 goals, but the Russian league season has already come to an end, meaning that the Brazilian won't be able to add to his tally.

Experienced Eintracht Frankfurt striker Theofanis Gekas converted a spot-kick this weekend and now sits fifth in the standings with 13 Bundesliga goals.

The biggest winner of the weekend is Lille attacker Moussa Sow though. The Senegal international netted a hat-trick to help his team to a 6-3 win over Lorient and has now scored 13 league goals. The 24-year-old might not be the biggest name in European football, but Sow seems like one to be reckoned with following his recent form.
