Carlo Ancelotti has told Tottenham it will be difficult to attract new players if they fail to secure UEFA Champions League qualification.
Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last term and made the most of their European adventure, reaching the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Real Madrid.
However, they are struggling to make it through to next season's edition of the tournament and need to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to get back on track.
Harry Redknapp has declared that his star names such as Gareth Bale and Luka Modric will not be sold in the summer, but Ancelotti has indicated that it could be hard to keep some players without Champions League football.
"If you are not able to do this the next year, it will be more difficult to manage and to attract the players to your team.
"When you have the smell to play the Champions League, you would like to play every time the Champions League."
Redknapp backing
Despite his side's recent slump, Redknapp remains the hot favourite to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager after Euro 2012.
And Ancelotti has no doubt that Redknapp would be capable of taking on such a challenging role.
"He has the ability, the skill, the experience to manage the England team in the future," the Italian said.
"I saw his team play. They are playing with good organisation.
"As a manager, he has a very good relationship with the players."
